The importance of School Infrastructure on Children. In 2013 a study was conducted by the University of Salford in Manchester; UK and it was noted, that the classroom environment can affect a child’s academic progress over a year by as much as 25 percent.
The year-long study took two lines of enquiry. The first was student data, such as age, gender and performance level in math, reading and writing at the start and end of an academic year. The second evaluated the overall classroom environment, taking into account different parameters such as classroom design, colour, natural light and noise, temperature and air quality.
Notably, 73 percent of the students performed better when they were exposed to a better building environment. This study gives us an overview of how external factors can also count greatly towards a child’s educational success.
Another study by the Institute of Education concluded that the quality of school buildings can help or hinder learning and teaching. Well-designed buildings and pleasant surroundings can lead to better attendance and concentration as well as motivation and self-esteem – factors which can improve performance. This affects their behaviour and attitudes and can significantly enhance or impede the learning process.

Any place can be good to read and learn for those who love to read and study. For them, knowledge is immaterial, space does not matter, and the physical context is secondary. However, if we look at this in the reality of educational systems, the condition of the schools directly impacts the performance of the students.
Importance of School Infrastructure on Children
The location of a school has enormous significance, and it should be set up in a suitable atmosphere. It should be far away from the noise and the polluting atmosphere where the child can easily absorb what is being taught in school.
The ambience should be calm, spacious with good amenities and utilities in a visually appealing landscape. The school should be clean and have enough lighting; useful facilities such as libraries, toilets, playgrounds, sinks, multipurpose rooms etc.
Now consider a school that is almost in ruins. The classrooms are dirty, the flooring needs repairs, the roof looks like it will collapse any second and the bathrooms are unusable. Parents and teachers prefer to stay away from this school.
This is a secondary school is Ogbunka in Anambra state. At one time the school had an enrollment of 450 students and now sadly that has fallen to almost 70. The school structure has 3 classroom blocks in a poor state, 5 unusable toilets and remains of what used to be a library.
Helpers Social Development Foundation has taken over this project and we want to save this school from being shut down completely. Our restoration plan includes the renovation of the classroom, clearing of the site, construction of a well and construction of bathrooms. We need your help to make this happen.
