Project Summary
Helpers Foundation work to ending cervical and ovarian cancer in Nigeria through community case finding and prevention education awareness. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Nigerian women and the second cause of cancer deaths for women between the age of 15-44. Helpers Foundation believe that these cancers are preventable and treatable when detected early. Our goal is to end it through early screening, HPV vaccination, and community action-especially in rural areas.
Challenges and solutions
Nigeria bears one of the highest burdens of cervical cancer in sub-Saharan Africa, with thousands of new cases and deaths recorded annually. Many women are diagnosed at advanced stages due to lack of funds for medical treatment. Roughly 7,900 deaths annually from cervical cancer have been estimated in Nigeria. The Ending Cervical and Ovarian Cancer Awareness program will address the root causes of preventable deaths among Nigerian women.
Through community sensitization and referral support, the program encourages early medical evaluation of ovarian cancer symptoms. This project will reduces stigma and cultural barriers by collaborating with community health workers, nurses, doctors religious and traditional leaders.
