ROLES OF PARENTS IN CHILD UPBRINGING

Roles of Parents in Child Upbringing. On October 2nd, 2020, Helpers Social Development Foundation together with Fundamental Women Empowerment Foundation organized knowledge sharing session with parents at Imezi-Olo rural community in Enugu State, Nigeria with the message on Roles of Parents in Child Upbringing. Helpers Social development foundation has the mission and vision of empowering people, helping the needy and less privileged, enlightening the minds of the benighted and ensuring that men have access to basic amenities.

It is on the strength of this vision that the parents at Imezi-Olo were engaged on the 2nd of October to enlighten them on what it takes to raise a child in this time.Imezi-Olo is quite a rural community that does not esteem or see Western Education as a gift to humanity. They are majorly engaged with all kinds of Agricultural activities like planting, fishery, piggery etc, paying little or no attention to their children’s education in the community. The founder of the fundamental women empowerment foundation; Mrs Ndubisi Martha in addressing parents in the community, revealed to parents the opportunities they and their children stand to gain when they embrace education.

However, as the teachers doggedly train the children academically and morally, she emphasized that parents have about 60% role to play in order to ensure that the potential of a child is holistically harnessed for the fulfilment of his/her purpose in life. She also stressed the need for parents to rise to their responsibilities to ensure that every one of their children become what they desire to be in future.

ROLES OF PARENTS IN CHILD UPBRINGINGIn addition to that, the representative of Helpers social development foundation, Chiamaka Agbim enlightened the parents on the sexuality of their children. According to her, the busyness with farming activities and so-called important matters has made them forget their role in educating their children in matters concerning their gender differences which has exposed them to all forms of sexual abuse.

She cited some cases where some children became sexually abused even under their parental watch as a result of the careless attitude of some parents. She enlisted some strategies to easily communicate the sex education to their children without getting their minds corrupted, for one thing, is paramount, if the parents and teachers fail to educate the children about their sexuality then social media, television more especially will end up corrupting them badly.

Some strategies which include; encourage them to say NO to secrets, not allowing anybody to touch their private parts, reporting anybody sexually abuse them etc.

Parents were clarified on various issues raised.

The people were given opportunities to state the needs of the community of which hunger and lack of employment amongst the youths was the major problem affecting the community.  Some parents state that they love education but their children will not learning with entry stomach.

A free HIV status test was carried out to all the participants. Free face mask and refreshment were given all the participants. The villagers experienced immense gratitude to Helpers Social development foundation for such a kind gesture extended to them at this difficult time.

We need your kind support to alleviate the suffering of those parents.
